VISITORS: GENERAL / MEDICAL/ BUSINESS
If you are coming to the United Kingdom as a general visitor you are allowed to stay for up to six months. There are different types of general visitor and what you are allowed to do as a general visitor to the United Kingdom. If you intend staying for longer than six months you need to look at the Family to Join / Tier 1 / Tier 2 / Tier 4 sections of this website.

The current published service standard is that the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) will decide 65% of applications within four weeks.

Please bare in mind that as a visitor to the United Kingdom, the UKBA and the British Government endorses certain rights and responsibilities to all applicant. There may be instances where a visitor can switch their current visa to another category. All visitors will need a sponsor in order to indemnify their stay.
The UK have agreements with certain states which exempts that country's nationals from applying for a visitor's visa (less than 6 months). These nationals have their visas endorsed upon arrival at port (airport etc). All other nationalities must apply for a visa before coming to the United Kingdom.
